TOEFL Study Guide
TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is an examination created by the
Educational Testing Service to measure English proficiency in non-native
speakers. It is a required exam for foreign students interested in pursuing undergraduate or
graduate study at American universities. TOEFL tests are given year-round at numerous locations
in the United States and it is also available online.
The TOEFL is divided into 4
sections: listening, structure, reading and writing.
Since 1963 the TOEFL has been used as a standard measure of the English
proficiency of candidates who apply for scholarships offered by the government
and universities. Colleges and
universities in other English-speaking countries besides the United States and
Canada also require applicants to submit their TOEFL score to be considered for
admission.
There are currently three testing methods available:
- Paper-based TOEFL
- Computer-based TOEFL
- Institutional TOEFL
The United States Immigration Support team has developed this TOEFL Study
Guide with the supervision of accredited and experienced English as a Second
Language instructors. The TOEFL Study Guide teaches the strategies to score high on a TOEFL exam.
Focusing on test-taking strategies instead of grammar is more effective in getting
a higher score on the TOEFL than extensively studying English, especially after
the student has reached a certain proficiency level in English.
The "TOEFL Study Guide" contains:
- Overview of the TOEFL test
- How to prepare for the TOEFL
- Time Management during the exam
- Strategies for guessing answers
- Recommended practice time
