A foreign national who wants to live and work permanently in the United States must first become a permanent resident (Green Card holder). A foreign citizen whose spouse or parent is a permanent resident in the U.S. may be able to obtain permanent residency in the U.S; what is otherwise known as a green card. The spouse or parent of the Green Card applicant must be willing to act as a sponsor, and must have the financial means to support the foreign citizen relative economically. There are no educational requirements to qualify for a Green Card through the sponsorship of a permanent resident relative.

The following relatives may be sponsored by a Green Card holder:

• Spouse (legally married husband or wife) of permanent residents
• Minor children of permanent residents
• Unmarried children (of any age) of permanent residents

Siblings: If you are a lawful permanent resident (Green Card holder), you are not eligible to sponsor your brother or sister to live and work permanently in the United States.
