Description:
The United States has Embassies and Consulates in almost any country around the
world. An embassy is a permanent diplomatic mission with the purpose of
improving the national interests between the host country and the United States.
In case of problems between the countries, the ambassador may be recalled to the
United States as a sign of broken relations between the two countries. While
there is only one U.S. embassy in a foreign country, there can be several
consulates located in areas with a strong population of U.S. citizens or many
U.S. tourists. The purpose of a consulate is to help individuals and businesses
in the region. United States citizens with lost passports or in need of
government assistance can contact the consulate. A consulate is subordinate to
the Embassy. In countries with no U.S. consulates, the embassy will perform the
same tasks as a Consulate.
