A United States passport certifies an individual’s identity and U.S. citizenship. This official government document is issued by the United States Department of State. A valid United States passport has many uses. A United States Passport may be used to enter most foreign countries, as it is an internationally recognized travel document that allows the passport holder to travel abroad and to return to the United States.

As of January 23, 2007, all U.S. citizens are required have a valid travel document when traveling by air between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, Bermuda and all other international destinations. Only the following valid travel documents are accepted: U.S. Passport, U.S. Passport Card, AIR NEXUS card or U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Card.

The process of applying for a United States passport can be a frustrating experience. It is recommended that all applicants follow the instructions in the U.S. passport information included in the U.S. Passport Application and Renewal Guide before submitting any applications. The application guide describes how U.S. citizens can submit a passport application on their own and without the costly use of an agent or third party. U.S. Passport Requirements

U.S. passport requirements maintain that only U.S. citizens have a right to apply for a U.S. passport and a U.S. Passport Card. You must first apply for United States citizenship if you are not a U.S. citizen before applying for a U.S. passport or passport card.
