Description:
OPT (Optional Professional Training) is a temporary work permit issued by the
USCIS to eligible international students. The purpose of OPT is to give students
an opportunity to work in the United States after completing a degree. There are
different requirements that must be satisfied before the Optional Professional
Training can take place:
- The student must be a full time student
- The work must be related to the degree obtained
- The F-1 student visa must be valid
OPT is available to students in good standing for a 12 months period after
completing higher education. Optional Professional Training may be applied for
several times under certain conditions. The OPT card is a nonimmigrant work
visa. Many students go on to be sponsored by their employers for an H-1B visa
during their OPT period. Employers may also sponsor H-1B workers for a Green Card.
