The airing of ABC’s “Homeland Security USA” recently fueled protests at the front of ABC studios in California. The rally was organized by an immigrant advocacy group called Southern California Immigration Coalition (SCIC). Members of an anti-illegal immigration group called Save Our State showed up to offer their support of the show. The reality show features employees of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) who are responsible for immigration enforcement at U.S. seaports, airports, and land borders. Some viewers claim that the show portrays only one side of the immigration debate and doesn’t depict the hardships of immigrants. One protester whose husband was deported one year ago stated, “Deportation happens to nice, normal citizens like me. It’s not a problem that is just among the immigrant community…it’s a problem for all citizens.” Others claimed that the show “perpetuates these stereotypes that all Mexicans are undocumented.” On the other side of the protest, some claimed that the show isn’t “race-based” at all. An advocate of immigration enforcement went on record to state, “We are lucky to be in a country where we have a government that wants to secure us, and we should want to be secured unless we forget what happened on Sept. 11. Without secure borders, we would have no idea what is coming in here. It’s not racist to want to have a secure nation.”
