Today passports are an absolute necessity if you plan any kind of international travel. Countries that used to require a picture ID and a voter's registration card now require a passport. More importantly, the U.S. requires a passport to regain entry. Passports are good for 10 years so that can mean you could do a significant amount of travel. If you look at your passport you'll see the general information page that has your photo and personal information, followed by a series of blank pages. These pages are used by countries to issue visas and other types of travel documents necessary for crossing borders. If you run out of pages, you run out of the ability to cross a border. Ordinarily, border officials can only place one stamp per page. While the passport comes with enough pages to accommodate most travelers over a ten year period, you will want to watch your supply if you cross on a regular basis to visit family or if your business requires international travel. Remember the one stamp per page rule so just because you have the "space" for more stamps doesn't mean you can get more. Each travel document has to have its own page.
How to get New Pages for Your Passport
If you're getting close to the end of the pages and your passport is still valid you can order more through the mail by submitting USCIS Form DS-4085. You can download the form from the USCIS website or you can visit a passport office (typically post offices) and obtain one in person. When you complete the form you will need to send it along with your passport and the application fee to the USCIS address shown on the form. Since you are sending an important personal document (your passport) it's advised that you use registered mail so you can track its delivery and get a receipt for its acceptance. If you need to expedite your DS-4085 be prepared to shell out an additional fee. Contact your nearest passport office and explain your situation. They can often add the additional pages right at the office. Obviously timing is everything in obtaining your new pages in time so be sure to submit your USCIS Form DS-4085 when you have a break in your international travel. In as much as you have to submit your passport with the application, you won't be able to cross a border until it is returned to you with the new pages added.
Don't get Stuck without Passport Pages
Whatever you do, don't start a trip without adequate pages to get you back into the country. If you see a border official stamping the last page in you're passport, then you are done traveling. This means you will have to spend time at the local embassy or consulate trying to arrange for more pages and this is truly a waste of both your time and the time of the embassy staff. Getting new pages for your passport using the DS-4085 is easy. Procrastination is the enemy. Just make sure that you apply for the additional pages in a timely fashion so you don't find yourself "grounded" because you have no room for additional visas.
