  • Asylum and Refugee Status in the United States: Individuals being persecuted in their home countries may apply for asylum, refugee status, or temporary protected status in the United States.

  • Contributions of Immigrants to the United States: Immigrants, both legal and illegal, continue to be attracted to the United States and its opportunities. In a report published by the CEA, or Council of Economic Advisers, immigrants were found to positively contribute to the U.S. economy.

  • Driver's Licenses and Social Security Numbers for Illegal Immigrants: After 9/11, the federal government has added extra security measures when obtaining a state identification card, a driver’s license and/or social security numbers among other legal documents.

  • Illegal immigrants buy real estate and get mortgages with ITIN: Many illegal immigrants come to the United States to achieve the American dream. Part of the American dream is to purchase a home. Mortgage companies do not require buyers to have a Social Security number to purchase a home in the United States. Immigrants wanting to buy a home need to have a special tax ID referred to as the ITIN.

  • Immigration Law: In the United States, immigration law generally pertains to the regulations governing immigrants and immigration to the country. Immigration law determines who may enter the country, how long visitors or immigrants may stay in the country, and the grounds for deportation from the United States.

  • Immigrants Send Money Home in Record Numbers: Many foreigners send remittances to their families they left behind in their native countries. For some families of immigrants, cash sent from the United States helps to supplement income or may be a solo source of income.

  • Immigrants Struggle to Learn English: In 2001, the U.S. government declared that requiring prospective drivers to understand English was discriminatory.

  • Sanctuary Cities: Certain cities across the U.S. have reputations for being more immigrant friendly. In sanctuary cities there tends to be more support for illegal immigrants around the community. Some examples may include immigrant activists and church groups.

  • Working as a Nurse in the United States: The Nursing Relief for Disadvantaged Areas Act of 1999 introduced the H-1C visa which allows foreign nurses to temporarily work in the United States.
