- Sanctuary Cities:
Certain cities across the U.S. have reputations for being more immigrant-friendly. In sanctuary cities there tends to be more support for illegal immigrants around the community. Some examples may include immigrant activists and church groups.
- Drivers Licenses and Social Security Numbers for Illegal Immigrants:
After 9/11, the federal government has added extra security
measures when obtaining a state identification card, a driver’s license and/or
social security numbers among other legal documents.
- Illegal immigrants buy real estate and get mortgages with ITIN:
Many illegal immigrants come to the United States to achieve the American dream. Part of the American dream is to purchase a home.
- Immigrants Send Money Home in Record Numbers:
Many foreigners send remittances to family left behind in their native countries. For some the relatives still back in their home countries, remittances help supplement income, but for others it may be their only source of income.
- Asylum and Refugee Status in the United States:
Individuals being persecuted in their home countries may apply for asylum, refugee status or temporary protected status in the United States.
- Immigrants Struggle to Learn English:
In 2001 the U.S. government declared that requiring prospective drivers to understand English was discriminatory.
- Working as a Nurse in the United States:
The Nursing Relief for Disadvantaged Areas Act of 1999 introduced the H-1C visa which allowed foreign nurses to temporarily work in the United States.
- Contributions of Immigrants to the United States:
Immigrants, both legal and illegal, continue to be attracted to the United States and its opportunities. In a report published by the CEA or Council of Economic Advisers, immigrants were found to positively contribute to the U.S. economy.
