Numerous immigration rights groups are working to stop the increasing number of deportations occurring under the Obama Administration. These groups called on the President to use his executive authority in the matter in the hopes that he would use it to help reduce the number of illegal immigrants that ICE is deporting. The group of activists promised a city by city campaign as a way to put pressure on the President to make a change in the activities of ICE.
Congress Unlikely To Pass Bill
It is unlikely, both sides of the issue agree, that Congress will pass any type of immigration issue in the next two years. Many of those who are a part of this group of activists want the President to step in due to the inability of Congress to make any changes that would help to legalize these immigrants this year. The group wants the United States president to intervene and stop all deportations from occurring until Congress can find a way to settle the immigration issue. According to the group, these illegal immigrants are the victims in this situation in that they are suffering because of a broken system and deserve to remain in the United States. This is particular true, the group says in situations where the illegal immigrants have children in the United States who are citizens. Thus, deporting the parent would separate the family.
Calling a President
One of these groups, called Refugee Advocacy Coalition, is working to convince the president to take a stance saying that it is not possible to count on Congress to take action. The executive director for the organization, Eva Milliona, says, "In this climate, we cannot expect Congress to take action to right these wrongs, but change can still happen if President Obama can find the courage of his convictions." The group states that the president promised to make immigration one of the things he took action during his campaign and some feel slighted that the president has taken no action in this area in the first two years he's served the country. The president himself says he wants Congress to act. However, there has been no muscle put behind this area, until he tried to do something late last year during the lame duck session. Then, his plan to help young adults and illegal immigrant students did not pass.
What Is The Solution?
Various groups have opinions on what the solution is, including some that believe that Congress just needs to be pushed on the issue. That is what Cecilia Munoz stated, who is a top White House aide who works on immigration. She stated that the system is broke and reform is needed, but note "We don't believe it's an argument that does allow the president to simply say there are laws that he will choose not to enforce." However, she noted that the president did use some leeway to reduce enforcement focus so that it is targeted more towards criminal aliens rather than just illegal immigrants.
